Where does the UK’s most recognisable police force go from here?

Baroness Casey's long-awaited report into the Metropolitan Police has now been released. The report was largely expected to highlight extensive cultural failings within the institution. However, the report goes far further than that, the 350+ page report depicts an overworked, under-resourced police force, with an endemic toxic culture that is failing both its employees and the public.

As sobering as the report is to read, none of the information contained within it is new. Sadly the issues highlighted have been raised before, not necessarily collectively, but certainly separately on multiple occasions over many, many years. 

However, what is different this time is that there really is no shying away from Baroness Casey's report, as it lays bare the problems the force faces. This report was requested due to the tragic murder of Sarah Everard by a serving police officer, it is desperately sad that it was something so awful that forced the microscope to be held to an institution that has recognised its failings for quite some time - but has failed to effectively address them.

So where does it go from here? 

Baroness Casey's report leaves nowhere to hide for the Metropolitan Police and there can surely now be no excuse for not addressing these failings. What is clear, however, is that the issues faced are vast, and the 'Met' will be hard pushed to effectively address them on their own. 

Fortunately, the UK has an array of thought leaders, charities, non-government organisations and private businesses that can help address the issues faced. Hopefully, the 'Met' will use these extensive resources, they will engage with those that can really help and will make much-needed positive change. 

An effective, trustworthy police force is a necessity for the fabric of London. It is now hoped that with the advent of this report, the process of improving the culture and effectiveness of the capital's police force can begin. Although make no mistake, due to the breadth and depth of the issues this will not be a quick fix, it will be a long process but it must be done and it can be done effectively, with the right support.
